Unfortunately time constraints (i.e my day job) keep getting in the way of me updating this site so all Ive been able to do so far for the Wolves page is a very basic bit of background.
Ive shown below a football cigarette card from the Ogdens AFC Nicknames series that shows a caricature of the most commonly known nickname for Wolves, which is of course Wolves !!
The text on the back of the card reads;
“With a record extending over fifty years, Wolverhampton Wanderers is one of the historic clubs of the Midlands. In 1879 a junior club named St Lukes amalgamated with the Wanderers cricket team and became known as the “Wolves”. As long ago as 1893 they won the Cup and fifteen years later they were successful again. The Rev K R G Hunt was a member of the latter side, which defeated Newcastle United, and he is one of the few amateurs to win a Cup medal since the introduction of professionalism. The “Wolves” are notable as a club which has depended largely on local talent”
So there you have it, not the most detailed of explanations of one of the more famous football nicknames but dont worry I will be coming back to this page to expand on it a bit !!
