Unfortunately time constraints (i.e my day job) keep getting in the way of me updating this site so all Ive been able to do so far for the Lincoln City Nickname page is a very basic bit of background.
Ive shown below a football cigarette card from the Ogdens AFC Nicknames series that shows a caricature that portrays the mischievous Imp that earned Lincoln City their famous nickname – The Imps.
The text on the back of the card reads;
“The nickname of Lincoln City is the “Imps”. The original Lincoln Imp is one of the medieval sculptures decorating the famous Cathedral, a delightfully grotesque figure with horns, cloven hoofs and a broad grin. Lincoln City has one of the finest playing pitches in the country,the club was one of the first members of the Second Division in 1892-93, and except for two breaks held its position until the first season after the war. They then passed into the Northern Section section of the Third Division but have now made their way back into the Second Division”.
So,there you have a very brief history to the famous Imps nickname of Lincoln City, dont worry though I will be coming back to this page to expand on this particular football nickname a bit more !!
