Like many of the tobacco companies at the turn of the century Cohen Weenen only entered the football cigarette card market once and then concentrated on other subject matter.
Their offering however was a very colourful and nicely put together set of cigarette cards featuring the Captains of the Divison 1, Division 2 and Southern League teams.
A few examples of Cohen Weenen’s Football Club Captains” football cigarette cards.
The set was named “Football Club Captains” and the teams featured were;
Arsenal, Aston Villa, Barnsley, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Bradford City, Bradford PA, Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers, Burnley, Bury, Chelsea, Chesterfield, Clapton Orient,Crystal Palace, Derby County, Everton, Fulham, Gainsborough, Glossop, Grimsby Town, Hull City, Leeds, Leicester City, Lincoln City, Liverpool, Luton Town, Man City, Man Utd, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Newcastle United, Northampton Town, Norwich City, Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Oldham Athletic, Plymouth Argyle, Portsmouth, Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers, Reading, Sheffield Utd, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Stockport County, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swindon Town, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford, West Bromwich Albion, West Ham Utd and Wolves.
These cards are now quite rare and when originals do become available they can go for well over the £20 per card. Luckily however they were reprinted in 1998 and full sets and individual cigarette cards can now be picked up for very reasonable prices.
In fact I do actually have some for sale on my football memorabilia site Footybits.
